Professional Development The goal of this category is to help teachers internalize the strategies used by our nation's most successful teachers. This "Teaching As Leadership" framework incorporates theories of malleable and fixed intelligence, motivational theory, the self-fulfilling prophecy of low expectations, working effectively within a new community, internalizing responsibility for student success, and finding additional time and resources to meet student goals. Resources provided within this framework include rubrics for self-evaluation, co-investigation resources, and guidance for department chairpersons and other science leadership positions.

PLEASE KEEP THIS QUIET - This is THE Teaching As Leadership rubric used by Teach For America corpsmembers across the country, updated for 2006-2007. Every corpsmember uses this to assess their teaching strategies... now you can use it too. THIS IS ABOUT AS CLOSE TO CONFIDENTIAL MATERIAL AS YOU CAN GET IN THE EDUCATION WORLD. If TFA knew I had this up here, I could get into some deep trouble.
Round 1 in the formal cycle provides for teacher reflection on how the first few weeks have been going. You can use these materials early in the year, or near the middle. If gives the teacher an opportunity to reflect and self-evaluate, with some direction on how to make changes.
The TAL rubric is also included. Have the teacher rate their efforts using the rubric worksheet.
During Round 0, you and the teacher will be taking a close look at progress with developing strong, foundational goals, backwards planning, and problem solving around any questions or concerns the teacher may have--especially as they relate to customizing planning, assessment, and tracking tools. These resources will help your teacher get started on the formal cycle support of co-investigations and reflective guides.
To help you and the teacher to maximize the little time you have, have the teacher complete the following documents in preparation for Round 0, (but keep in mind that this is a problem solving conversation, so make sure the teacher does not feel pressured to have a 'perfect' TAL (Teaching As Leadership) plan. In order to problem solve, just plan on have the teacher share their current progress.
These resources will help you as the teacher's coach to co-investigate with the teacher regarding their teaching. During the co-investigation, you will help the teacher identify student progress towards the big goal (according to data), student gaps in progress towards the big goal (according to data), student habits (actions) that are leading to this progress, and student habits (actions) that are contributing to these gaps in progress.
