Rollyo Search Engine

If you've ever assigned a project to your students that requires the use of a search engine for online research, you know the challenges students face trying to find good information. The great the about the Internet is access to the huge volumes of great information out there. The bad part about the Internet is access to the huge volumes of bad information. Rollyo is changing this. Teachers are making searchrolls for their students at Rollyo.com and pointing them to this website for their research.

Here's how it works. Launched in September 2005, Rollyo allows you to create and publish your own search engines, based on websites you decide to include. Teachers can create customized searches built on Yahoo search that include only those sites you want included. By creating your own searchroll, you have students searching only those sites that you know you can trust.

To set up (or "roll") a search, you are asked to name up to 20 websites, pick a category and tag the search. A search can be public or private - public searches are ranked by popularity and listed on the site. You can also share searches with others directly.

Once the students search, they can also expand the search out to all websites to get additional results. Other cool features include the ability to see what other's have created, and leverage those searches as well. High Rollers are those whose searchrolls become popular with the Rollyo community. Current High Rollers include Debra Messing, Arianna Huffington, editors at PBS Frontline and many top bloggers.
