Programs You Can Use

Having trouble opening some of our toolbox files?  You'll notice that many of our files have been "zipped."  Also, some of our toolbox tools were uploaded to our server as Adobe .pdf files.  You'll need special programs to work with both file types.  Here's where you can download them... for free.

Zip and PDF files
A Zip file is sometimes called an "archive" file. The Zip file itself is really just a container... it holds the real files inside it. The purpose behind the Zip file is transportation and storage. The Zip file acts like a ziploc sandwich bag - it holds contents inside for easy transporting and storage. This makes Zip files (and their counterpart Rar files) very valuable to file sharers and downloaders.

A Zip file achieves three things:

  • It bundles one or more files into a single container file.
  • It compresses (archives) its contents to be as much as 90% smaller size.
  • It can provide an optional password padlock on its contents.

There are a couple of options for programs to unzip Zip files.  WinZip, WinRAR, and PKZip are specialty software programs that create and manage Zip files.  Science For America recommends PKZip since they provide a reader for free.  WinZip and WinRAR are offered for a price to download the software from their websites.

PDF formatted files are the most popular files on the Internet, after HTML files. PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format that has captured all the elements of a printed document as an electronic image that you can view, navigate, print, or forward to someone else. PDF files are created using Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Capture, or similar products. To view and use the files, you need the free Acrobat Reader, which you can easily download. Once you've downloaded the Reader, it will start automatically whenever you want to look at a PDF file.
